Disposable Tampons
There are two main types of disposable tampons:
- Applicator Tampons
- Plastic Applicator
- Cardboard Applicator
- Non-applicator Tampons (also known as “digital tampons”)
One of the biggest concerns about tampons is the chemicals that may be contained in the fibers of the tampon. These chemicals are used to clean, disinfect, bleach and whiten the tampon during manufacturing. Because the tampons go inside your body where it is constantly in contact with a large area of the soft tissue of your vagina, chemicls in tampons can have a larger effect on your health than the similar chemicals in pads. Another issue is pesticides used to protect the natural fibers like cotton during the growth process.
Another concern with using tampons is toxic schock syndrome (TSS). TSS is caused by bacterial growth encouraged by the tampon while it is inside your vagina. The cases of TSS has been largely eliminated after chemical treatment of tampons were curtailed. BUT, it still occurs. Your chances of getting TSS is so so so small, that you do not have to worry about it. You do however have to be aware of TSS and the symptoms.
